In Germany, the proportion of older people or people in need of care is increasing due to demographic changes. In addition, since January 1st, 2017, the concept of requiring care has been broadened by law. Both changes have led to a significant increase in the number of people in need of care. Medical progress also contributes to the fact that more and more nursing staff is needed. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there were 4.1 million people in need of care nationwide in 2019. This is an increase of 21 % compared to the last statistic from 2017.
The need for nursing staff will continue to increase in the long term. Prognoses assume shortfalls in providing care and nursing services. This can already be observed and is strenghtened by the fact that there is currently a significant shortage of nursing staff. This affects all medical institutions and care facilities, such as hospitals and clinics, specialist clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and outpatient care services.
The lack of specialized staff in nursing and geriatric care is already noticeable across Germany. There are already more vacancies than unemployed skilled workers. Experts estimate that around 150,000 additional nurses will be needed by 2025.
It is very clear: The need for nursing staff cannot possibly be met with staff from Germany alone! Facilities are desperate for skilled staff in oder to maintain service levels and standards. They are very happy to employ nursing staff from abroad - especially since training of nursing staff in numerous countries outside the EU, such as Brazil and the Philippines, meets very high academic standards.
In 2019, a total of 1.9 million caregivers were employed in Germany, of which 1.2 million worked in nursing and 0.7 million in geriatric care facilities. The total number of people employed in care increased by 3.6 % from 2018 to 2019. This increase will continue to grow.
It should also be noted that a large part of the nursing staff receives social security contributions. In June 2020, there were 1.7 million nurses nationwide who benefited from social security services. These services are very well developed in Germany.
There are also good opportunities for nursing assistants. In 2020 (June), a total of 615,000 geriatric nurses were employed with social security benefits. Of these, 48 % were employed as geriatric nursing assistants, the rest is registered nursing staff. At the same time, 1.11 million nurses were employed in clinics (subject to social security benefits). The proportion of nursing assistants amounts to 16 % in such facilities.
The absolute majority of nursing staff in Germany in 2020 (June) were registered nurses (72 %). In addition, there are 12 % specialists or experts. Nursing specialists with additional training are particularly in demand! Numerous further job training opportunities exist, which, after successful completion, provide opportunities for career advancement and thus higher salaries.
Nursing specialists in Germany have additional qualifications in professional fields, such as intensive care, anesthesia or specialist nurses for psychiatry. The quota of specialists amounts to 10 %.
Specialists in geriatric care have additional qualifications, for example in the fields of oncology, clinical geriatrics, rehabilitation or palliative medicine. Significant staff shortages are also expected in these fields in the future.
The average gross salary for skilled workers in full-time employment in Germany in 2019 was 3140 € per month. The payment of nursing staff in hospitals is usually above this average, earning around 3539 € per month, while nursing staff in care homes earns a little below this average, around 3034 € per month. The salary of nursing assistants and elderly care assistants is correspondingly lower. Differences also exist according to region and type of care facility. Specialists and experts can earn significantly more in geriatric care and other nursing fields.
Due to the shortage of skilled workers in nursing professions, workers from abroad are increasingly being hired in Germany. Overall, the proportion of foreign nurses in June 2020 was 9 % in clinics and 15 % in geriatric care. This proportion has increased continuously in recent years. The recruitment of nursing staff from non-European countries plays an increasingly important role.
Due to the growing demand for nursing staff, new opportunities for skilled workers from non-EU countries were created in March 2020 through the newly passed Skilled Immigration Act. In particular, personnel with recognized vocational training or nursing degrees now has considerably better chances on the German job market.
When employing nursing staff from non-EU countries, both the language barrier and the recognition of foreign qualifications pose the greatest challenges. Advanda offers great support in this niche: We find staff with the perfect qualifications for the advertised positions and prepare our nursing staff in their home country with extensive language courses. Experience has shown that it takes about a year in Germany, until one can apply to have a foreign job title officially recognized. Upon formal recognition, nurses can then be employed as full-fledged nursing staff. Until then, our nursing staff works in the same facility and is employed as nursing aid - either in clinics or nursing homes.

Your individual life situation may also have an impact on the duration, such as at work or in the family. The chart is not legally binding, the duration can change significantly due to unforeseen events (worst case). (e.g. Corona)
The federal government of Germany has created an information portal for nursing staff who would like to work in Germany, in which the regulations for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications are explained.
Advanda ensures that the nurses we place acquire the B2 language certificate (GER) with medical nursing terminology in their home country. This means that our applicants can hold a normal conversation in German. We work together with selected local organizations for language training. Technical terms from the medical / nursing field are also part of the linguistic preparation. These are particularly important so that you can be deployed and integrated into your workplace as soon as you arrive.
This language training is of course free of charge for each nurse or health care specialist.
As soon as you are in Germany, you have the opportunity to take additional language qualifications up to the C2 standard (nearly native language skills).
We ensure that our nursing staff is familiarized with German nursing standards, training guidelines and the organization of the German health care system. Additional qualifications for the employer's job requirements might play an additional role.
We also train our applicants in intercultural issues and aspects of German culture in order to give each nurse a successful and fulfilling integration into everyday German working life with German colleagues.
